 Videos filmed by civilians claiming to be projectiles launched into the waters around Taiwan have spread as China conducts military exercises in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the self-ruled island.

The videos, which were published by the British newspaper "The Guardian" and whose authenticity could not be verified, show the launch of a group of missiles in the waters opposite Taiwan, while civilians were documenting the scenes with their phones.


This comes after Beijing announced its largest military maneuvers, some with live ammunition, in several areas surrounding Taiwan.

Today, Thursday, Taiwan's Ministry of Defense said that Chinese forces fired "several" ballistic missiles into the waters surrounding Taiwan.

 

 The Taiwanese ministry condemned what it described as "reckless actions that threaten regional peace," according to AFP.

A brief statement issued by the Taiwan Ministry of Defense said that the Chinese Communist Party "launched several batches of Dongfeng ballistic missiles in the waters surrounding northeastern and northwestern Taiwan, starting at about 13:45," according to the island's local time.

The Taiwanese military did not confirm the exact location of where the missiles landed or whether they had flown over the island, which China considers an integral part of its territory.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army also confirmed the launch of the missiles, with the spokesman of the Eastern Theater Command of Operations, Colonel Shi Yi, said that the Chinese forces launched "a multi-model conventional missile force attack on predetermined sea areas off the eastern part of the island of Taiwan," according to AFP.


Colonel Shi said that "all the missiles hit the target accurately, and the accuracy of the strike and the barriers to entering the area were tested."

The Chinese military exercises came in response to Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, and it is expected to continue from Thursday to next Sunday.

Pelosi's visit, which arrived in Taiwan on a plane Tuesday evening and left on Wednesday, has strained the atmosphere around the island of Taiwan.
