 The plane of the US House of Representatives Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, arrived on Tuesday evening, in the Taiwanese capital, Taipei, despite the Chinese threats against the visit to the island.

Direct pictures showed Pelosi, 82, traveling on a US military plane, arriving at Taipei's Songshan Airport, as she was received by Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.

Pelosi is on an Asian tour that includes announced visits to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan.

Pelosi is the highest-ranking US official to visit Taiwan since former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in 1997.

 

China believes that the visit of a high-ranking US official, which may be the first in about 25 years, carries America's tacit recognition of the independence of Taiwan, which China considers an essential part of its territory.

 

China has warned against Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, which is self-governing and Beijing considers part of the country, while Washington stressed that the Speaker of the US House of Representatives has the right to visit if she wants to.

 

And circulated videos showing the movement of Chinese army troops to Fujian Province, near the island of Taiwan.

 

For its part, Russia warned today, Tuesday, the United States against the visit, and indicated that its decision to go to Taiwan is a "provocative act" that puts America on a collision course with China.
