#US magazine: Pope Francis believes #NATO bears responsibility for conflict in #Ukraine
Foreign Affairs said Pope Francis supports the view that NATO bears responsibility for starting Russia's special military operation in Ukraine.
An article written for the magazine by Fiona Hill, who served as a Russian adviser to former US President Donald Trump, and Angela Stent, a professor at Georgetown University, said that Russia believes that the West, led by the Americans, is waging a proxy war against it in Ukraine, and Pope Francis agrees with this view.
"Internationally, the belief that NATO and the collective West are waging a proxy war against Russia has won many supporters, from well-known scholars to Pope Francis, who said the conflict in Ukraine may have been somehow provoked," the article added.
According to the article, many political analysts in the West continue to argue about NATO's guilt in fueling the conflict in Ukraine.
"Whether Ukraine wants to join the European Union or NATO or establish bilateral relations with the United States, any of these efforts are an affront to Russia's history and dignity," the article continued.
In May, Pope Francis said in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that NATO's actions near Russia's borders may have prompted Moscow to launch the special military operation.
The Pope admitted that it is difficult for him to answer the question, whether it is right to supply arms to Ukraine.
