On Sunday, al-Qaeda terrorist organization released a book written by a prominent member that includes a detailed timeline that ultimately led to the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, which left nearly 3,000 people dead in three locations.

On the occasion of the 21st anniversary of the attacks, the book was written by Abu Muhammad al-Masri, a prominent member of Al-Qaeda who was killed in Iran in 2020.

In the approximately 250-page book, al-Masri said that the organization had been preparing for an attack targeting American interests since it set foot in Afghanistan in 1996, with the aim of dragging the United States into a protracted war of attrition. The initial idea emerged when an Egyptian pilot suggested flying a civilian plane carrying thousands of gallons of flammable materials to an “important and symbolic American building,” according to a book shared online by Al-Qaeda’s media arm, As-Sahab.
Some militants were selected for further combat training in 1998 and then attended flight schools in various parts of the world.

Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in Afghanistan in a targeted US air strike more than a month ago. Al-Zawahiri took over in 2011 after Osama bin Laden was killed by US special forces in his hideout in Pakistan. The terrorist group has yet to appoint a new leader.
On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four planes and stormed them to several locations in the United States. The attacks sparked the US-led military intervention in Afghanistan.
