#Moscow: #Washington has more nuclear warheads than the #START-3 allows.
Andrei Belousov, a member of the Russian delegation to the UN Conference on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, announced that Washington possesses a greater number of means of carrying nuclear warheads, than the START-3 treaty allows.
"The United States announced that part of its strategic bombers and launch pads on board submarines carrying strategic missiles, has been re-equipped and is no longer capable of using nuclear weapons," Belousov said.
He added that Russia cannot at present verify this in the context of the Strategic Offensive Arms Reduction Treaty (START-3).
He added that "therefore, the United States has a large number of means dedicated to the use of nuclear weapons, which is greater than what is provided for in the treaty."
He pointed out that "this bypass allows the American side to increase the capabilities of the strategic forces by 1,200 combat heads in the shortest period of time."
It is noteworthy that the Strategic Offensive Arms Reduction Treaty (START-3) is the last arms control treaty between Russia and the United States, which is still in force. It is expected to expire in 2026.
