The US Department of Justice announced that it had evidence of concealing classified documents from the FBI when it tried to retrieve them in June from the property of former US President Donald Trump in Florida in June, prompting the FBI to conduct an unprecedented search of his home.
In 54-page court documents, prosecutors on Tuesday presented their evidence of obstruction of justice, accusing Trump aides publicly for the first time of having falsely confirmed in June that the former president had returned all government records he had stored at his home after leaving the White House in January 2021. .
It also revealed that Trump's lawyers "explicitly prohibited government employees from opening or looking inside any of the boxes" inside the storage room when FBI agents first traveled to the Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach in June to retrieve the records.
In the file, which it filed with the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the department said the government also found evidence that "government records may have been concealed and removed from the storage room in an effort likely to obstruct the government's investigation."
She posted a picture of some records found inside Trump's home and bearing labels classifying them as classified, and some of them refer to confidential human sources.
This comes ahead of a court hearing Thursday in West Palm Beach before Judge Ellen Cannon, who is considering Trump's request for a special judicial supervisor to review documents recovered from Mar-a-Lago on August 8, many of which have been classified as classified.
The Special Judicial Supervisor is an independent third party, sometimes appointed by the courts in sensitive cases, to review material potentially under the privilege of attorney and client.
