Former US President Donald Trump said FBI agents raided his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, on Monday, as his son admitted it came as part of an investigation into Trump's transfer of official presidential records from the White House to his Florida resort.

The unprecedented search of a former president's home would mark a major escalation in the records investigation, one of several investigations Trump is facing about his time in office and his private business.

The Justice Department declined to comment on the raid, which Trump said in a statement included "a large group of FBI officers."

 The FBI field office in Miami did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Eric Trump, one of the former president's adult children, told Fox News that the search involved boxes of documents Trump had brought with him from the White House, and that his father had been cooperating with National Registries on the matter for months.

A source familiar with the matter confirmed to Reuters that the raid appeared to be linked to Trump's transfer of classified records from the White House.

Trump said the property was "currently besieged and occupied". The reason for the raid was not mentioned.

"After working and cooperating with relevant government agencies, this surprise raid on my home was neither necessary nor appropriate," Trump added.

 “These are difficult times for our nation, as my beautiful home, in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raids, and occupation by a large group of FBI agents,” the former US president said, in a statement posted on the social media platform “Truth.” , according to AFP.

"It's prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the justice system, and an attack by far-left Democrats who are desperately trying not to run for president in 2024," he added.

"Nothing like this has ever happened to the president of the United States before," he added.

CNN reported that Trump was not at home at the time of the raid, and that the FBI had executed a search warrant to enter the building.

Trump, who has made his Palm Beach club home since leaving the White House in January 2021, generally spends the summer at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, because Mar-a-Lago usually closes in May for the summer.

A federal law, called the US Presidential Records Act, requires the preservation of memos, letters, notes, emails, faxes, and other written communications related to the president's official duties.

A source familiar with the matter said in April that the Justice Department had launched an investigation, still at an early stage, into Trump's transfer of presidential records to his Florida home.

The investigation comes after the US National Archives and Records Administration notified Congress in February that it had recovered about 15 boxes of White House documents from Trump's Florida home, some containing classified material.

The US House of Representatives Oversight Committee announced at the time that it would expand the investigation into Trump's actions and asked the Archives to turn over additional information.

Trump confirmed earlier that he had agreed to return some of the records to the Archives, describing it as a "normal and routine process."
