The Director of the General Department of Emergency and Epidemic Control at the Sudanese Ministry of Health revealed details of the country's first infection with monkeypox.
On Sunday, the Sudanese Ministry of Health announced the registration of the first confirmed case of monkeypox in West Darfur.
According to the ministry, the person infected with monkeypox is a 16-year-old student, and his condition was confirmed by the National Public Health Laboratory.
The ministry denied recording other cases of the disease in Sudan, according to the Sudanese news agency "SUNA".
Monkeypox: Will it turn into an epidemic?
For his part, the Director of the General Department of Emergency and Epidemic Control at the Ministry, Dr. Muntasir Muhammad Othman, said that the suspected cases of the disease "amount to 38", categorically that all of them are "negative, except for the case of West Darfur."
Othman added, "The active investigation is now working by the state's Ministry of Health, with the help of the Federal Ministry of Health, to determine the destination of the infection."
Sudan's announcement of the first case comes while the World Health Organization, last July, declared monkeypox a "global emergency", launching the highest level of alert, in an attempt to contain the outbreak of the disease that has infected thousands of people in dozens of countries so far.
"The risk in the world is relatively moderate, with the exception of Europe, where it is considered high," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, adding: "We can control monkeypox and stop its spread, using available means."
The World Health Organization stressed the need for "coordinated international interaction, launching funding, and concerted global efforts to cooperate in the exchange of vaccines and treatment."
